Set within a rugged landscape, the Bridge House by Wallmakers transforms constraint into creativity. The site, split by a 7m deep gorge, demanded a solution that connected two parcels of land without disturbing the natural terrain. The architects conceived a 100ft suspension bridge formed by four hyperbolic parabolas—an elegant, tensile structure that hovers gently above the water. Built from minimal steel and a thatch-mud composite, the bridge is designed to achieve both strength and lightness while maintaining thermal comfort. The thatch cladding, inspired by pangolin scales, camouflages the house among the trees and enhances insulation, while the mud layer strengthens and protects against pests. Inside, a central oculus draws light and rain into an open living space, and reclaimed materials—jute, mesh, and ship-deck timber—root the home in principles of reuse and restraint. The result is a structure that coexists, rather than competes, with its environment.
